Izmir Multiple Sclerosis Society of Turkey (IMSS), was formed in 1988 by MS patients, their families, volunteers, doctors, psychologists, nurses, social service specialists, lawyers,and other interested people.

In 1988 the first activities were held in a living room, then continued in a house consisting of only one floor in a lovely tangerine garden.In May 2004 the old building was knocked down keeping the garden for building todays permanent building of two floors covering 270 squaremeters with a total usage area of 533 squaremeters. In the IMSS's new building you may find two big saloons for pysiotherapy and a pool for hydrotherapy, daily treatment areas for physchotherapy, educational meeting and seminar saloon for 60 people, a cafeteria, activity rooms, and a library.The specialized Multiple Sclerosis Nurse and a psycologist who is exprienced for multiple sclerosis are ready full time table  from Monday to Friday for our members. Besides Dokuz Eylül University School of  Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation supports pysiotherapy exercises  2 days a week at IMSS. The Yoga and Reiki activity rooms are also present.Our new building is the first Multiple Sclerosis Rehabilitation Center  which works completely in the basis of voluteer  formed for the multiple sclerosis patients of Turkey .

The aim of IMSS in the future five years is constructing the first MS Hospital of Turkey, in İzmir.The project of the hospital was designed in accordance with similar hospitals in the world. The project was produced  in accordance with the guidance of Dokuz Eylül University School of  Medical Faculty, Department of Neurology; Dokuz Eylül University School of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation and Dokuz Eylül University School of  Architecture Faculty.The 13 000 squaremeters of area in Urla Keklik Tepe that belongs to IMSS will be used for this reason.In the garden there will be a small hotel system for the accomodation of the patient relatives as seen in the examples in Western countries.

IMSS offers a number of services and programs designed to help meet the needs of MS patients and their families.Specialized programs on TV and radio; taking part in the national festivals; periodical commercials about MS in the newspapers, magazines; and also the exceedingly interesting group, the youth clubs may be mentioned  as national and foreign activity examples.
